The exhibition is the result of a project that was launched in February 2003 by the Partners of Veterans Association of Australia Inc (PVA). Family members of war veterans were invited to “record their life journeys in textiles through the design and creation of individual quilts and an accompanying written story.” The aim of the project was to bring partners and families of veterans together in a spirit of healing and harmony.

The project coordinators were delighted with the response, with 47 works submitted from across Australia – ranging from first time quilters to old hands. All up there were 26 individual quilts and 21 group contributions.

Hundreds of people viewed the inaugural display at the 2006 Canberra Craft & Quilt Fair, describing the quilts as "powerful", "enlightening", "moving", "thought-provoking" and "outstanding."  Margaret Rehorn, National Project Coordinator from the PVA, urges all Australians to see these historical quilts and consider the trans-generational cost of war to veterans, their families and the wider community. "It is hoped their experiences and emotions will give you an insight into the pain and futility of war and help you remember the sacrifice our war veterans and families have made," said Margaret.

Maree Gebhardt, the Exhibition Co-ordinator, conducts tours of the exhibition and explains the significance of the quilts. Read about Maree on the last page.
