Page 1 of 2 From Red Rocks to Coral Sea - Australian Quilts in Public Places
Formed in 1996 by the Australian Quilters Association (AQA), Australian Quilts in Public Places (AQIPP) aims to raise the profile of quilting in the public view. A quilt is selected from the AQIPP biennial exhibition and acquired by AQA for display in a prominent public place.
In 2007, the theme From Red Rocks to Coral Sea was chosen to inspire quilters to illustrate Australia’s many different environments from rain forests to the sea that have shaped the identity of the people who live here. The collection of quilts, it was hoped, would celebrate the diversity of the Australian landscape and its people.
No one was disappointed. Jacqueline Healy, Director of Bundoora Homestead said: ‘Bundoora Homestead was delighted to host this significant national competition and acknowledge the contribution of quilts to contemporary art practice. The quilts reveal the innovative responses of textile artists to the theme From Red Rocks to Coral Seas. Texture and colour combine to create art works that tell personal stories and tackle global issues..…All the works in their different ways celebrate Australia’s diversity.’
The winning quilt, On the Beach, will be acquired by AQA for display in a prominent public place in the city of Darebin and its maker, Marina Holland will receive $2000.
